I left school in 1968 and started work as an apprentice joiner on Chatsworth Estate earning £3-14s a week by 1971 my wages had risen to £7-16s a week I seem to remember a big hoo and cry from the tradesmen at the time as there wages reached £20 a week, these were not the top wages around at the time because as an employee of the estate it was regarded as a job for life with the possibility of a tied cottage with very low rent.

I started work in 1967 as an apprentice engineer at £2 10s a week - my mum took 10/-for board and lodging and the £2 I squandered on wine, women and song. Petrol was six and eightpence a gallon and a pint of brown and mild was one and ten pence.
I'm just too busy being fabulous!

My point being, that although compared to today's prices 10p per pint seems a billy bargain, it's less so when you consider wages of the time

Mind you, I also remember in the early 80's borrowing my dads car, and a fiver was more than enough to cover any fuel I used and put a fair bit extra in it to butter him up for next time I wanted to borrow it
